Hi. My name is Matt Rinker, and I'm honored to be your candidate for Atlanta City Council.
I'm a proud East Atlanta homeowner, and I've lived in Atlanta since 2004. I moved here from the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, where I was born and raised. My dad, Roger, worked in the Steamfitters Union and in the car industry, and my Mom, Judi, stayed home to raise me and my three older siblings and then pursued her own college education. She's now been a public school teacher for 25 years and I'm very proud of her. Hard work, education and giving back to the community were all pretty important in our household and are values I carry with me to this day. And being the youngest of four kids I learned pretty quickly to stand up for myself, but more importantly to learn when compromise is best. As your representative on Atlanta City Council, those are two life-lessons that will guide every decision I make on your behalf.
Growing up as the son of a teacher meant that education was always a priority. My parents also taught me that putting your all into what you do is important. Those life lessons have guided me each day of my life. While in high school, I became one of the first students in my school system to earn both an Advanced Studies Diploma while also completing Vocational-Technical education in Radio & TV Broadcasting - blending a balance of academia and a work-force ready education. While in high school, I served as Class President and also as the Virginia Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) State Treasurer. As State Treasurer, I travelled the state promoting vocational-technical education to students, educators, and administrators.
I went on to a small liberal arts college and earned two Bachelor degrees - one in English and one in Communications - from Longwood University. My time at Longwood was full and productive as I served as Class President, reporter for the school newspaper and news director at the college radio station. I founded and served as President of the Longwood College Democrats and was also elected President of our Phi Kappa Tau chapter. During my time in Phi Kappa Tau, I was named Outstanding Chapter President by our National Fraternity due in part to my work strengthing relationships with our Alumni, achieving a balanced budget, and curing outstanding debts within the membership.
For the past 12 years, I have worked in Marketing, specifically in the apartment development and management industry. I currently directly oversee operations of a business with revenues of $6million per year. I like to give back, which is why I volunteer and have raised money for CHRIS Kids, Hosea Feed The Hungry, Project Open Hand, Georgia Safe Schools Coalition, and Lost-N-Found Youth. I am active in sports organizations like ATLAS Bowling League, GoKickball League and the Hotlanta Softball League where I have served as a League Officer for the past 4 years and have helped raise thousands of dollars to local charities.
I'm running for Atlanta City Council because for nearly a decade I've watched our great city excel in some areas, and flounder in others. Crime is up, good paying jobs are stagnant in our district, and our roads and sidewalks just keep getting worse. And our current councilwoman has been long absent on addressing our needs. We deserve more. We can and must do more to help Atlanta live up to its full potential. I hope you'll check out my Issues Page, or email me directly with any questions at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I hope to earn your support and your vote over the next few months. Thank you so much for your time.
